The Nutri Centre Nutritionist Diane watched this seminar for you and shared her expert opinions:

"In this talk, Yaeli aims to simplify this ancient practice for beginners as it can be complex for many. She focuses on one of the most important areas of the body – the digestive system. If digestion is well balanced then better health all round can be achieved.

She explains about how people can be fitted into different categories and therefore certain herbs and foods may help to heal them – while some foods may be unsuitable for them. This is a different concept to western nutritional and herbal medicine. For example, butter may be more healing for one person and less healing for another.

At Nutri Centre we stock the entire range of Pukka herbs and their other nutritional range – to include aloe vera, coconut butter and neem oil – to name a few."

"Yaeli Stern BSc (Hons) travelled in India for the first time at the age of 19. Following this trip she encountered ill health and as a result searched for alternative and healthier lifestyle options. When discovering Ayurveda she felt an affinity to this ancient science and her deep connection with it began.

Since then Yaeli has studied and practiced Ayurveda both in India and the UK. Her main areas of expertise and interest are women's health, including menstrual disorders, menopause and obstetrics, digestive health, stress and stress related disorders.

She is currently completing her MSc in Ayurvedic Medicine in London and practices privately in Forest Row."

Menopausal symptoms can include irregular bleeding, hot flushes, bladder infections, mood changes, body aches, sleep disturbances and weight gain. On average women experience the menopause between the ages of 48 and 52. But this age can vary significantly depending on a number of factors. Oestrogen levels will decline during the menopause.

It is important you are not just eating well, but digesting and absorbing it well. Dietary factors, exercise and stress levels are important areas to consider. The maintenance of a healthy weight is a key factor in menopausal women, with some oestrogen being produced by the fat cells.

Research has demonstrated that vitamin E is effective in relieving hot flushes and menopausal vaginal complaints.  Chromium has been shown to improve glucose tolerance. B vitamin, vitamin C and magnesium as well as other nutrients are involved in energy production in the body, which are all important factors during the menopause.

Oestrogen protects the skin, leading to a breakdown of our natural defence mechanisms during this time, with cystitis common among menopausal women, with cranberry, Ura Ursi and Goldenseal helpful natural alternatives to help combat bladder infection.

Oestrogen helps to keep bones strong. Bones do not just depend on calcium. Magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin D, K, boron, manganese, folic acid, strontium, silicon, zinc, copper, vitamin C and B6, sodium and protein all influence the integrity of the bones. Exercise is also essential for our bone health.

This is a densely packed seminar full of information and well worth the watch to get an in-depth view on symptoms and natural treatments for the menopause.

Women may begin to have odd symptoms during peri-menopause and menopause. They may start to feel tired, experience hot flushes, or get a little befuddled if they don't feel so good. Many women are struggling with careers, family life and the recession. Often they are looking after their children or teenagers as well as caring for elderly parents. They are being stretched every which way as never before.

Previous generations had an extended family of support near at hand, whereas in our present day society we are more alone. Why do these menopausal symptoms arise? Life is at a faster pace, food quality has fallen - less nutrients are found in our diet than our grandparents ate.
