"This week’s talk was with Patrick Holford. Patrick Holford is a world renowned expert in nutrition and mental health. He is on television and radio regularly in the UK and abroad. He is the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London and the Director of the Brain Bio Centre in London.
Patrick discussed how we can prevent or recover from diabetes and heart disease through diet, supplementation and exercise. He explained that we no longer eat how we were designed to eat as hunter gatherers and as a result have a diet low in protein, high in unsaturated fat, increased sugar, low fibre and high salt. Patrick believes our genes have a small role to play in the cause of type 2 diabetes and a poor diet and lack of exercise are the main contributors.
Patrick talked about the “4 pillars” of good health, weight loss and preventing diabetes: a low GL diet, soluble fibre (such as oats), supplementation and resistance exercise. Patrick recommends reading and following his ‘Low-GL Diet Bible’ book. If you have or know someone with diabetes then he recommends the ‘Say No To Diabetes’ book. The supplements he recommends are the Get Up and Go Low GL Breakfast Shake which is a good source of protein and nutrients, CinnaChrome to help balance blood sugar and cravings and the Optimum Nutrition Pack which contains a multi vitamin and mineral, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Finally Patrick advises it is essential to have the right attitude and support and follow his recommendations."
